Valentine’s Day means very little to me. I’ve never brought into the hype. Chocolate and flowers do nothing for this girl. I’m not romantic. Over the top displays of affection, sappy stuff, or pricey dates aren’t my style. Just be yourself and treat this like the ordinary 24 hours it is. Or better yet, find the type of relationship where every day becomes a special celebration of love.
The highlight of my day consisted of teaching RE at Neshoba this morning. I love the fact that my spiritual home doesn’t force religion down children’s throats. We emphasized the First Principle of Unitarian Universalism– the inherent worth and dignity of every person– as we discussed our similarities and differences. How many churches do you know of that read The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss to illustrate their message? I’m eternally grateful to be a member of a community that is inclusive, diverse, and respectful of everyone’s unique spiritual journey.
However, I must admit I’m looking forward to this day a year from now. I plan to make Joey a bacon bouquet which he can devour while I’m nibbling on the cheese platter he’s assured me I will receive. Maybe we’ll even create a quirky tradition that has nothing to do with romance. And then we’ll celebrate our annual anniversary the following day. ❤️
With infinite love, gratitude, and respect,
