Independence Day

I cannot experience this holiday without thinking of what my country means to me.  What happened in California taught me that this is not the land of liberty.  Compared to other nations we enjoy considerable freedoms– and for the First Amendment I am thankful– but we are not free.  Being born in this nation offers incredible opportunity.  Yet there is a crisis on our soil, one that rips apart families and traumatizes our youngest citizens.  Family Court and Child ‘Welfare’ Services must be reformed.  Now that we’ve settled into our routine, it’s time to hit the ground running.  My goal is to publish a book about our experience by the end of this year.

William, Kinsey, and Adam

All hail Mother Theresa!  In true saintly fashion she not only delivered Tatum to our doorstep but she chauffeured Adam and me round trip to her house for a Fourth of July swim.  Quite a few folks were there but I ended up on pool duty with Adam, Kinsey, and William.  We had a blast.  As if swimming, snacking, and going to the playground wasn’t fun enough….Mother Theresa’s house comes equipped with a trampoline.  Fear not, that shadowy figure lurking around in their backyard at night is not an intruder.  It’s just me tiptoeing from the pool to my bed on the trampoline in the backyard that is my new home.  😉

Come nightfall we took the kids to see the fireworks in Germantown.  Noisy explosions in the sky aren’t my cup of tea.  Both Adam and Tatum loved the show but I cringed with every boom and prayed I wouldn’t get burned.

Bonus points for Tatum’s wave

Happy birthday, America.

About Cocktails With Hemingway

I'm blunt and opinionated. Virtually everything I say or do is a contradiction but I'm not a hypocrite. I never hesitate to speak my mind and never fail to leave an impression wherever I go. You love me, you hate me, but you'll never forget me.
