Memorial Day 2013

“America’s fighting men and women sacrifice much to ensure that our great nation stays free. We owe a debt of gratitude to the soldiers that have paid the ultimate price for this cause, as well as for those who are blessed enough to return from the battlefield unscathed.” ~ Allen Boyd

Memorial Day for this family was blissfully ordinary.  Dad and I went to Walmart [how’s that for a slice of Americana?!] with the kids in tow.  In addition to Happy Meals [to further show our appreciation of all things USA] for Adam and Tatum, we grabbed a few grocery items and a new tire for my bicycle.  Once we got home Tatum took a nap.  Adam and Dad piddled around in the garage while I took a bath.  Then I cooked dinner while Mom made the tasty creation pictured above.  Life doesn’t get any better.

Our surprise visitors were the icing on our patriotic cake.  Catching the five of us under one roof requires advanced planning….yet Krystal Hooper pulled off this feat with luck alone.  Adam’s going through a ‘girls have cooties’ phase so he didn’t quite feel the love when Krystal reminded him that she used to change his diapers.  We were standing outside in the driveway chatting when her fiancee said something that meant the world to me.  He told me that I was a strong person for surviving California.  To hear that from somebody whom I don’t know very well– who is in the military nonetheless– profoundly affected me.  I kept my cool but I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge what that meant to me.  So thank you, Brian.  Thanks to you both for your continued friendship, constant support, and today’s special visit.

About Cocktails With Hemingway

I'm blunt and opinionated. Virtually everything I say or do is a contradiction but I'm not a hypocrite. I never hesitate to speak my mind and never fail to leave an impression wherever I go. You love me, you hate me, but you'll never forget me.
