Stay

There is someone in Memphis.  <3

“Not really sure how to feel about it

Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can’t live without you

It takes me all the way

I want you to stay

Funny you’re the broken one but I’m the only one who needed saving….

Sister study sessions and supernovas

Last night I had every intention of inundating your news feeds, emails, and subscription updates with at least half a dozen entries on Cocktails With Hemingway.  It will probably be Friday before I get the chance to do so– but at least I have a good excuse.  My beautiful, brilliant little sister met me at an undisclosed location for a midnight study session on the eve of her last final for Brit Lit.  All I did was brew a pot of coffee and proofread her already fantastic paper, yet I’m always grateful for the opportunity to engage in some academia.  Ashley is officially a junior at the University of Memphis now– I am so incredibly proud of her– and the dedication, responsibility, and hard work she consistently delivers never ceases to amaze me.

[[ SIDENOTE:  Yesterday I told a certain person in my life that I'd be blogging about them.  The only entry published involved Miss Cleo-ish predictions-- and that definitely was not the material to which I was referring.  Embarrassing myself around this feller takes a little more than that but I just wanted to clarify in the event that he is reading. ]]

You know these are two of the most intelligent English majors the University of Memphis has ever seen

In other news yesterday, Liam Gallagher had an unfortunate incident with a blue M&M.  When I heard of this candy coated mishap– truth be told– I wondered if his afflictions stemmed from a literal piece of candy or some variation of MDMA.  The brothers Gallagher should be invincible.  My Oasis obsession:  going strong for two decades now!

Lovely Liam, front and center

Here’s a whimsical Oasis song guaranteed to put a smile on your face.  What exactly is a champagne supernova, anyways?  I have a healthy appreciation for bubbly– and I’m a relatively literate space nerd– but I’ve yet to figure out the meaning behind this one.

Day 14: What’s on your iPod?

20130315-221803.jpg
I nominate this tree [en route to G's treasure trove] to be my primary source of funding.

If I had a money tree with unlimited harvest potential– among countless other things– I could shop the Apple Store with reckless abandon. But alas I do not. A $3 investment gave me three songs on my iPhone from this fine fellow.

Day 3: What Makes You Happy?

Generally speaking the things that make me happy can be categorized into seven themes: children, good people, helping others, travel, humor, the little things, and songs.

☻ Children ☻
Adam and Tatum bring me the greatest joy I’ve ever known– motherhood. The rewards are infinite. My son and daughter complete me.
Yet even before I was a parent I’ve always loved kids. Whether it’s teaching the K-2nd grade students at Neshoba, tutoring, babysitting, or anything in between, I do what I can to be around children as often as possible. Few things are more gratifying than watching a young person learn and develop as they blossom before you. Their innocence, enthusiasm, wide-eyed curiosity, straightforward logic, frequent questions, and ‘saying the darnedest things’ moments are endearing.

Always look for an excuse to unleash your inner child.

☻ Good People ☻

Examples of the tragic consequences of bullying make headlines with alarming frequency. Social media exacerbates the epidemic, contributing to bad behavior from all age levels. People can be so cruel. So it’s always refreshing to see stories of folks behaving nicely. Like the homeless man who returned a woman’s wedding ring– and her subsequent fundraising to reward him for his kindness. Or the kids who stood on the sidelines cheered on their physically handicapped classmate as he finished a race. The airline employees who helped a passenger get to his dying mother’s bedside. Anyone and everyone who does something out of the kindness of their heart…doing something because it’s the right thing to do without expecting anything in return. Those who stand up for others and speak out against injustice.
Instances such as these occur on a daily basis. Wouldn’t it be nice if the media covered more of those to counteract the negativity that saturates our news? Let’s inspire and encourage.

☻ Helping Others ☻

If not for my desire to help others as much and as frequently as I am able then my ability to weather the storm would be severely compromised. Simply put, helping you helps me, and the mutual benefit makes me happy. I’m thrilled to make another person feel good about themselves or make their lives easier. Even the smallest actions, such as smiling at a stranger on the street, can have a big impact on their day.

☻ Travel ☻

I don’t care where I’m going, how I get there, who I’m with, or what we’re doing. If the opportunity to travel arises…my bags are packed and I’m out the door. Some of the best trips don’t involve any packing or even any bags. I live for those spur of the moment, impromptu road trips. Even though I have a passport and have traveled extensively– driving across the bridge into West Memphis to eat at Waffle House and cruise through an unfamiliar neighborhood makes for a ‘foreign’ experience. A wrong turn could easily be a source of frustration– or one hell of a story! Roll with the punches and make the most of it. And take lots of pictures.
[[Obviously traveling with the wee ones requires coordination and advanced planning, but it's still possible to incorporate an element of adventure and a carefree spirit.]]

The British Virgin Islands for Jen & Todd’s 2005 wedding is one none of us will ever forget.

☻ Little Things ☻
It truly doesn’t take much to make me happy.
Taking baths. Meeting somebody with whom you really ‘click.’ Finding imperative items for a fraction of the price at a thrift store. Meaningful conversations. Seeing the ocean. A delicious meal. Exciting games in Words With Friends. Stumbling upon unique rocks. Talking to Maris. <3

☻ Humor ☻
Life is funny. Nothing is ever so bad that you can't laugh. Virtually every situation contains humor. Laugh freely and laugh often. It's okay to be politically incorrect.

Cheer up, emo dude, top center.

☻ Songs ☻
I could be listening to the eulogy mid-funeral, hear one of these, and be in a great mood. Not that I anticipate that scenario ever happening or anything. ;)

The only two things I’m missing are a bassinet [my friend who works at Target is picking it up for me] and a baby tub [currently being shipped from Memphis].  Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who gave me surplus baby goodies and other gifts.  I appreciate it more than you’ll ever know.  Please don’t think I’ve lost my manners– I’m holding off on thank you notes until Tatum arrives so I can actually enclose a picture of her with and/or wearing your item[s].  =)

Though my pregnancy has been robbed from me, nobody will ruin Tatum’s birth.  For so long her impending arrival has been the light at the end of the tunnel.  Much to my dismay, holding her in my arms won’t get me out of the tunnel….but at least I’ll be bathed in light and can see the exit.  I can’t wait to meet my precious baby girl.  Soon enough we’ll all be together.  Within a matter of days this blog will take on a considerably happier, lighter tone.

Having spent the past few years as an internet presence, I’ve been in blogging game long enough to understand that certain topics [such as Whitney Houston] quadruple your traffic.  This is not something I’d exploit nor would I be so crass as to think that a breaking news item is ‘good for business’ but I think it’s so interesting to observe all the international hits since my post last night about the loss of a legend.  Most of the new traffic comes from Asia:  China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Lao People’s Democratic Republic.  I’ve also received a new follower from Greece and encourage you all to read his story.

Wish me luck, everyone.  I discovered an incredible publication last night that resonates with me personally…and they are looking for writers.  Tonight’s project involves filling out my application, answering questions, and gathering samples of my work.  I’ll reveal the name of the magazine after everything is submitted.  Of course this is only a freelance opportunity– something I’d do in my ‘spare time’– but I’m hoping and praying they’ll accept me.  Fingers crossed.

#FirstWorldProblems

Speaking of magazines, from now until Tatum’s arrival I’m going to be working constantly on JiLTED.  A burden will be lifted from my shoulders if my only responsibilities involve editing and nagging our writers to do their thing as we approach the March 24th deadline.  If you still haven’t called/emailed to discuss your contributions for the debut issue now is the time.  I’m especially looking forward to what people have to say regarding politics.  You know you have something to say about politics.

Hey Melissa Calvert!  I’m calling you out publicly here.   Don’t forget to be working on the logo, m’lady.  Please and thank you.  ;)

I’m going to eat the delicious matzo ball soup I made for dinner, take a bubble bath, and get in my pajamas to read a bedtime story for Adam on YouTube.  Bonus points for the fact that I just caught the opening performance on the Grammy Awards from the beautiful and insanely talented Bruno Mars.  More blogs to come later tonight.

9 days until Tatum’s arrival.  <3

Don’t Change Your Plans

And the names are……

If it’s a GIRLTatum Marisann Reed
If it’s a BOYDylan Andrew Reed

Neither one of us believes in names without significant meaning.  We chose Adam as a tribute to Adam Sontag and his middle name, Harrison, is the first name of Will’s deceased father.  Tatum is a moniker that Will and I have always loved.  Bonus points for the fact that Tatum O’Neal is someone whom I admire greatly.  Marisann is a combination of my best friend– my soul sister– Maris [who also named her daughter after me!] and Ann, a maternal family name from Will’s side.  Doesn’t it sound so unique and French-y?  ;)

Everyone knows I’m a lover of the written word.  I am also passionate about music.  So Dylan serves as a perfect way to fuse my penchant for the poet Dylan Thomas with the timeless songs of musician Bob Dylan.  Andrew was Will’s original middle name– it was changed from William Andrew Elder to William Anthony Reed for reasons too complex to discuss here– and we believe it’s important to recognize that a change of name on a piece of paper doesn’t change who you are.

Tatum Marisann or Dylan Andrew…..we can’t wait to meet you!  Mommy, Daddy, and Adam already love you so very much.  <3

I Miss You

Love is the universal language....

“I Miss You”

Incubus

To see you when I wake up
Is a gift I didn’t think could be real.
To know that you feel the same as I do
Is a three-fold, Utopian dream.

You do something to me that I can’t explain.
So would I be out of line if I said ‘I miss you?’

I see your picture.
I smell your skin on
The empty pillow next to mine.
You have only been gone ten days,
But already I’m wasting away.
I know I’ll see you again
Whether far or soon.
But I need you to know that I care,
And I miss you.

With infinite love, gratitude, and respect,

Sloane
