Marvelous Monday morning

Despite the fact that I can usually bounce out of bed bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to conquer my day, I am not immune to occasionally feeling sluggish on Mondays.  Today definitely was not one of those Mondays.  I woke up peacefully sans alarm clock at 5am and started week 4 of my Couch Potato to 5K program.  Then I ate a bowl of sugar free oatmeal with a hearty heaping of flax seeds and a glass of 1% milk.  No, I have not lost my mind and I’m not dieting.  But I feel so much better when I eat clean and healthy, so if I’m not at a restaurant or cooking for a special occasion, that’s what I plan to do.

Was there time for yoga and a virtual church service before the pitter patter of young feet?  There was!  Would you believe me if I said I did all of this without a single drop of coffee?  I kid you not….the pot that pumps the caffeinated lifeblood into our veins met its tragic demise yesterday.  Between my mother and me I give it another hour at most before we’re speeding to Target to make a purchase for the most essential home furnishing other than the bathtub.

Methinks I’m running on natural energy– unbridled passion and enthusiasm!!– because I renewed Cocktails With Hemingway for another year last night.

Thank you to Ginny at Capelli for my fabulous hair.

Thank you to Ginny at Capelli for my fabulous hair.

Endless thanks to my friend, Julia, who shared with me the Church of the Larger Fellowship.  It’s a Unitarian Universalist congregation without walls– meaning it’s all online.  Live services occur at 8pm ET on Sundays and 9am ET and 1:30pm ET on Mondays.  Beyond the website offers a wealth of information and opportunities to participate.  What an incredible supplement to my ‘in person’ spiritual community at Neshoba.  Even if you do not identify as a UU [or have no idea what that is]… I encourage you watch this afternoon’s service if you are able or check out some of the previous ones if you are not.  Consider it a way to enhance your current beliefs without detracting from any particular religion.  I assure you there is no crusade to promote our UU agenda found here either.  ;)

Fuel of the Gods

Now there’s a piece of Heaven if I’ve ever seen one. Peter Moon of RP Tracks fame sent this mouth watering image to me via Aunt Sarah.

Maple. Syrup. Infused. Whipped. Cream.

Be sure to check out my review of RP Tracks. And please, if you are in the Memphis area, go eat there for me. You won’t regret it.

Fettuccine and hippos

Last Friday’s visit with Adam was our first in San Luis Obispo. I suggested the SLO Children’s Museum– neither one of us had ever been– and we absolutely loved it. Truth be told, Adam was a bit young to fully appreciate some of the exhibits [there is a preschool play area on the top floor that's perfect for entertaining any wee ones not blinded by science], but who doesn’t enjoy three floors of cool stuff to touch and climb?! I’d highly recommend it for anyone with children 3+.

20130220-193924.jpg

Of course the hurricane wind simulator caught Adam’s eye immediately. After I emerged unscathed from my test run, he agreed to come with me. All it took was one windy round as a pair– and he rode solo the next three times.

20130220-194951.jpg

There aren’t too many places in this area where a child can be an astronaut, actor, and perform on stage with animals simultaneously.

20130220-195229.jpg

If not for the excessively loud children that arrived shortly after him then he probably would have stayed up here most of the time.

20130220-195537.jpg

He showed very little interest in the boats but was attempting to prolong our visit. I just really like this picture.

20130220-084427.jpg

Somebody clearly inherited Mommy’s penchant for pasta. Our mutual favorite foods consist of noodles drenched in various sauces. When Adam requested fettuccine Alfredo for lunch, I knew nothing else would suffice. Mama’s Meatball satiated our craving. He inhaled the giant dish, graciously allowing me several bites while he was eating [and the tiny portion of boxed leftovers], and bragged that he could eat over a hundred bowls in one sitting.

20130220-191322.jpg

Few things surpass the joy of encountering a faux hippopotamus on the back patio of a museum. With the exception of the live animal version at the Memphis Zoo, we’ve never stood face to face with Mommy’s favorite animal. Cue astounded ‘whoa!’ faces.

RP Tracks

Some of the decor

Some of the decor at RP Tracks

Let me preface this review with a confession: I am a creature of habit. When I sing the praises of a dining spot, what that really means is I am singing the praises of a particular dish at said dining spot. Buffets notwithstanding, there are only two exceptions to this rule. RP Tracks is one of them. Over the years I’ve eaten no fewer than a dozen dishes and loved them all. Granted, I have my favorite….but the fact that there are multiple menu items that I’ve ordered more than once speaks volumes about my adoration of all things Tracks.

tracks

Virtually every local I asked immediately recalled the discounted shots when the train passes. Who doesn’t love drink specials? In fact, I have some hazy recollections of adventures there during my University of Memphis days. ;)

However, do not make the mistake of dismissing RP Tracks as a college bar.

RP Tracks is a restaurant with a bar, and the food is spectacular. It’s certainly popular with the coeds, especially given its close proximity to campus, but it is truly a restaurant for all ages. Solo students perched on a barstool watching the game, couples whispering in a corner booth, families with children—all spotted during my most recent visit.

Bar area

Owned by Peter Moon and Rick Johns, RP Tracks has served the Memphis community for 25 years. It is one of the few restaurants still owned and operated by the original owners—and the two do not take this responsibility lightly. Moon speaks passionately about his vision for the restaurant, which includes plans for an outdoor patio area, and a commitment to affordable prices. Along with manager Jeff Potter, the enthusiasm is contagious, and it comes as no surprise that business is booming.

A massive overhaul of Walker Avenue promises to enhance the establishment and further solidify its status as a Memphis landmark. Yet within the cozy interior it’s the new weekend brunch that’s making waves. Served on Saturday and Sunday from 11-3, I jumped at the opportunity to accompany my aunt to a leisurely post-church meal.

No better partner in culinary crime exists than my fellow bon vivant, Aunt Sarah. I must give credit where it is due—she’s never met a stranger—and our mutual passion for vino only enhances the dining experience. To commence our meal at RP Tracks we opted to honor brunch tradition with a round of Bloody Marys, a beverage that warrants its own paragraph about my rating system.

Hello gorgeous.

Hello gorgeous.

Despite my frequent consumption of the spicy tomato elixir of the gods, I feel woefully inadequate with my descriptive abilities. Here’s the simple breakdown of my criteria:

1) How does the mixer taste?

2) When it comes to alcohol and spice—too much or not enough? I’m not ordering vodka shots with Zing Zang, I want a Bloody Mary. And if it’s too spicy for me I guarantee the average citizen is probably in tears.

3) And what about the extras? Garnish and other special touches make my heart happy;

Mary would be proud. Tracks does her eponymous drink justice. Bonus points for the three jumbo olives and completely submerged pickle.

If a Bloody or Mimosa isn’t your cup of spiked punch, wine starts at $5 and there’s a good selection of beer.

Aunt Sarah & me

Aunt Sarah & me

Since Aunt Sarah and I diligently count calories we gave our math skills a workout by selecting two entrees apiece. She ordered the Brunch Burger and a waffle while I chose the Marvelous Chicken and Quatro Queso quesadilla.

The Brunch Burger includes two 4 oz. Angus beef patties with apple wood bacon, sautéed onions, and pepper jack cheese served on an English muffin. Aunt Sarah requested her hollandaise sauce on the side. She praised the patty and dunked liberally into the hollandaise. With the exception of my yearly filet at Ruth’s Chris I’m not too keen on red meat—so I only took a bite. Yet that carnivorous nibble pleasantly surprised me as it had the taste of something I’d get at Ruth’s Chris as opposed to the typical hamburger.

Brunch Burger

Sampling Aunt Sarah’s waffle introduced me to the glory that is RP Tracks’ homemade maple infused whipped cream. Delectable. Scrumptious. Perfection. You know the diner scene from When Harry Met Sally? That’s exactly how I felt after the maple infused whipped cream. My manners flew out the window as I stuck my fingers in the cream and licked them clean. RP Tracks’ tragic flaw is that they do not offer mason jars filled with this divinity.

Maple. Infused. Whipped. Cream.

Maple. Infused. Whipped. Cream.

My absolute favorite dish at Tracks is the Quatro Queso. I’ve been eating it for years. Smoked gouda, feta, and cheddar jack cheeses ooze out of a tomato basil tortilla. Aunt Sarah says it’s comfort food but I view it as a 24/7 food. As soon as I pass through the pearly gates I hope I’m handed a Quatro Queso with a mason jar of maple infused whipped cream so that my palate is satisfied for all eternity.

Say cheese!

Say cheese!

Marinated chicken breast, thick cut apple wood smoked bacon, and Swiss cheese comprise the Marvelous Chicken. However, my penchant for maple infused whipped cream and my other entrée forced me to box the sandwich in its entirety. Upon waking from my food coma I consumed the sandwich cold and it was the perfect late night snack.

Those waffle fries were mighty tasty when dipped in maple infused whipped cream...

All the money in the world couldn’t convince me to eat anything that derives from a coconut—so when Aunt Sarah insisted I try the coconut praline icebox pie I decided it would be a delightful treat for my mother. Suffice it to say she has a new favorite dessert.

Life of Pie

Life of Pie

Only as I tucked my leftovers into the fridge did I notice the conspicuous absence of Styrofoam. A quick virtual search confirmed that RP Tracks is indeed certified by Project Green Fork, an initiative that ‘contributes to a sustainable Mid-South by helping reduce environmental impacts, with a focus on strengthening homegrown restaurants.’ Read more about Project Green Fork and their rigorous six step certification process here.

Perhaps if you’re a Memphian you’ve made the correlation between RP Tracks and RP Billiards. Located a stone’s throw from Tracks, Billiards calls the Highland Strip home, and offers multiple pool tables along with a kitchen and a bar. Patrons entering RP Billiards certainly can’t miss bartender Scotty James and signature top hat.

Scotty James

Scotty James

Here’s what Scotty told me about the job he adores: “It doesn’t matter how many people come to your bar…it’s how many come back!! Making people feel at home is very important. Serving a quality product consistently provides people with comfort. You have to convince customers that you truly care about them—and do it every day.”

And care he does. Scotty’s charismatic personality gives him an easy rapport with those who come to his bar and he consistently goes above and beyond to accommodate customers. Multiple postings on Scotty’s Facebook confirm he was sorely missed by yours truly.

Danielle and I never pass up an opportunity to rendezvous at Billiards.

Danielle and I never pass up an opportunity to rendezvous at Billiards.

Just as Scotty James boasts a loyal following, servers and bartenders at RP Tracks offer an impeccable customer service experience. Prompt and attentive service combined with friendly, personable employees creates a welcoming atmosphere for regulars and newcomers alike—which is no easy feat considering the steady crowd. Oh yeah, and did I mention the delectable food?!

Whether you’re seeking a few rounds of pool, weekend brunch, a satisfying dinner, or reasonably priced drinks—find it all at RP Tracks.

A glorious Sunday

I oftentimes wonder if my staunchly conservative father thinks us crazy folk at Neshoba are two steps away from establishing our own vegan, organic, and free trade commune.  That or some of us may be– gasp!– socialists.   Either way it’s always a delight when he comes to church with me.  We must not have terrified him too much with our quest for liberal world domination because this isn’t the first time he’s been my guest of honor.  Love you, Dad.

Sunday’s sermon:  “The Man Nobody Knows”

Who was this Jesus guy about whom we make such a hullabaloo?  Why was his birth important?  What does his message have to do with Unitarian Universalism?  Why Christmas?

It’s not in our faith tradition to proselytize.  But I’m always thrilled to share with people how important UU is to me, so please feel free to message me if you’d like to have that discussion.  Or better yet, check it out for yourself, at the Neshoba website.

“Rejoice always, pray continually”

Our next court date is December 9th.  Unlike what we’ve done so far [a 24 hour continuance due to one party's unavailability and being asked if I wanted to contest what was happening-- absolutely] this will be much more interactive and involved.  I refuse to utter another word in this department, just wanted to bring my readers up to speed.

Despite being totally drained from my day, I am so glad I forged onward and accepted a ride from a member of our church to the annual Thanksgiving service and tree lighting.  Talk about a cathartic experience.  From the looks of it we collected lots of canned goods for Loaves and Fishes and the message truly resonated within my soul– I felt like the sermon had been written just for me.  Essentially it involved giving thanks for ALL the things in your life, even the monumental challenges and obstacles, because those difficulties could “teach us through the toughness.”  I left lighter than I was when I arrived.

After church I felt significantly better….and realized that I hadn’t had a substantial meal in quite sometime– nutritional snacks can only get a pregnant woman so far– so I went to Il Cortile for a mozzerella sampler and a pasta entree.  Three different mozarellas were presented to me and all were delicious.  I was unaware of the distinct differing flavors within the mozzerella genre.  My pasta dish, the beef cheeks ravioli, tasted quite good as well.  It’s strange I gravitated towards this because I am not a big meat person, especially when it comes to a stuffing for a ravioli.  However the way the meat was cooked/seasoned pleased my palatte and the sweet wine reduction sauce was great.  I’m no culinary expert but it seemed like that sauce would work very well with numerous other foods too.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who opened their families and homes to me for Thanksgiving.  Although I am utilizing my day for quiet reflection– and packing!– those offers are truly appreciated.

Days 11-16

Here is some much needed reflection on my part.  No matter how ‘bad’ I think I have it….there are always countless people who have it much, much worse.  I am eternally grateful.

Don and his co-pilot in Afghanistan, '08

11)  It wouldn’t be the land of the free if it wasn’t the home of the brave– I am so thankful for our veterans– especially my dad and all of my friends who have served in the military.  Although every role serves a vital function in our armed forces, it boggles my mind all that is required of soldiers in combat and their families.  What a sacrifice.  Thank you.

12)  Two words:  my attorney.

13)  I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge every ‘hater’ or anyone who has ever tried to hurt me or wanted me to fail.  People like you make my happiness and accomplishments that much sweeter!  Perhaps this isn’t the most mature statement I’ve ever uttered but it’s always nice to prove people wrong.  Success is the sweetest revenge.  ;)

14)  Il Cortile makes my heart happy.  I’ve only been there once– and have no idea when I can afford to eat there again– but it’s comforting just knowing it’s there waiting on me.

15)  The fact that I’ll never stop hoping, dreaming, and planning is a reason to give thanks.  I’ve already got an idea for a really promising and beneficial non-profit that won’t require much of an initial financial investment.  Obviously I don’t have the proper time to devote to it now but I can’t wait until things settle and I can get started.  There will never be enough time in my life for all the schooling and experience I want….and that’s exactly the way I like it.

16)  So many little things bring a smile to my face.  Whether it’s the man who drops his old magazines off for me at the office, an unexpected coffee from my coworker, bus drivers who give me a break [knowing that I usually have a pass], the supportive teachers at Adam’s school, or the staff at two local organizations that put us on a special Thanksgiving list– these things make my day and mean the world to me.

Il Cortile is my new best friend

One of the best things I've ever put in my mouth.

Within the first week of my job the pastor made a horrible mistake:  he mentioned Italian food to yours truly.  Being the intrepid employee I am, I took it upon myself to Google the restaurant and salivate over their dishes.  When I finally made it to Il Cortile for lunch on Friday [a weekly food indulgence keeps me sane] I didn’t need to consult the menu I’d already memorized– but of course I did anyway– and I treated myself to the delectable caprese salad pictured here and ravioli con ricotta e spinaci.  It was absolutely divine.  I cannot recommend this restaurant enough.  Small animals would be sacrificed if I could have a caprese salad every day.  Just the mere mention of it has me longing….

In other news, the thing was identified by my coworker.  It’s a potato bug.  Apparently they are relatively common out here, though as the name implies found in more of an agricultural setting.  Let’s hope I never see one again.

5 Ways Methamphetamine Can Make You a New Person

Adam painted these in summer school. Aren't they lovely?

Sick and tired of having to justify your crystal meth habit to those sluggish, slow-brained folk?

15 Pregnancy Power Foods

Even if you’re not pregnant you should take a glimpse at these nutritious foods.  Raw broccoli may not be your idea of culinary bliss so be mindful of how to incorporate the items into dishes you enjoy.  I was pleasantly surprised how….common…a lot of these things were and how much of them I already like.  [[Sidenote: While I am on pregnancy and parenting websites daily-- I try to only share the ones I think will be most interesting to my readers-- regardless of whether or

not their uterus has an occupant or they claim a dependent other than themselves on their tax return]]

Innocence and the Death Penalty

I found this article through a link on an Amnesty International Piece entitled ’35 Years Of Death Penalty Regret.’  While I’m against the death penalty– though not for ethical reasons– the thought of innocent people facing execution makes me ill.  “Since 1973, 138 people in 26 states have been released from death row with evidence of their innocence.  Not to imply that a person should be found guilty if there is room for reasonable doubt [though it happens all the time]….but nobody should be sentenced to death without incontrovertible proof of their guilt of a heinous crime.

Lesbian marine in California to be jailed after she and girlfriend ‘faked marriages with male colleagues to pocket $75,000 in allowances’

The headline alone caused me to snicker before I even read this; however, there was really nothing funny in the piece.  To make a long story short the marine wanted to live with her civilian girlfriend off-base but couldn’t afford it, thus prompting her to marry a fellow soldier, a male heterosexual.  Of course– reading only the first few sentences– the rabble-rouser in me said: “Haha, look at them making a statement and calling attention to some archaic limitations our society places on love!“  But then we learn that the civilian girlfriend marries a marine as well…..their living arrangements are questioned, the marines are in lots of trouble and their is possible jail time.  Most shockingly, the female marine seemed blissfully unaware that she could get in any sort of trouble for this.  While I applaud the fact that she did not hide her girlfriend, she should have fully understood the consequences, and been willing to take more of an activist stance.  Overall I felt like her attitude and lack of research made her an inappropriate ‘role model’ [if you can even call her that] for the cause and A) it’s absolutely ridiculous that the military– though they certainly aren’t the only organization guilty of this– doesn’t respect and honor those who serve equally and B) marriage is still defined by gender as opposed to love.

Birth control, exams to cost more at Planned Parenthood

Budget cuts in Davidson County [Nashville, TN] put Planned Parenthood in a bind.  Sadly this is all too common at Planned Parenthoods throughout the nation.  Select staunch conservatives erroneously equate this crucial organization with an ‘abortion factory’– I actually heard that phrase used somewhere!– but your personal beliefs about a woman’s right to choose should not negate the importance of Planned Parenthood.  If you disagree with some of the services they provide, take your business elsewhere.  Don’t forget that they provide gynecological services to low-income and/or uninsured women, contraceptives, and disease testing.  We desperately need this.
