Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight FOUND ALIVE!

Miracales happen.  Not one, not two, but three women held for almost a decade were freed from captivity.  Never lose hope!

Rarely do we see happy endings for individuals who have been abducted.  Too often their lives are tragically stolen, which is heartbreaking and cruel.  Yet it is a different sort of heartbreak and cruelty for those who are missing with their fates unknown.  Media attention fades.  Cases [I despise using such an impersonal, clinical term for a human being who has disappeared] grow cold.  Those who have information– frustratingly and incomprehensibly– refuse to come forward.  New developments emerged this week regarding the abduction of  fellow Tennessee resident Holly Bobo.  Reading the impassioned pleas of Lauren Spierer’s parents takes my breath away.  The agony of not knowing….

Michaela photos on mantel 005

My friend, Sharon Murch, needs to find her daughter.  Michaela Joy Garecht was the victim of a witnessed stranger abduction in Hayward, CA in 1988.  Dear Michaela, you are missed and you are loved.  Your mother has never stopped looking for you.  She never will stop.  Michaela, know that there is hope!  I’ve never even met you and you’re always on my mind.

Sacramento Failed Matthew Hernandez

What sort of despicable creature kills their son in cold blood with a hatchet? Only a monster– pure evil that is incomprehensible to the rest of us– could murder their own child.

Matthew Hernandez

20130319-142234.jpg

Monsters exist everywhere. No part of the world escapes heinous acts from the vilest of criminals. The gruesome end to 9 year old Matthew’s life is a tragedy, one that could have happened anywhere, in any region or country. Killer Philip Hernandez could have been a resident of Delaware or Texas or North Dakota, anywhere besides California. Yet as grieving mother Jessica Hernandez will tell you….the state of California does not always act in the best interests of its most vulnerable population.

Cases such as Jessica’s are the extreme, but her allegations [evidence blatantly ignored in the courtroom, denial of basic rights, various forms of discrimination, etc.] echo throughout the state, a common denominator amongst far too many cases. Between Family Court, Child ‘Welfare’ Services, and the foster care system– something is very wrong here.

Jessica Hernandez and her two sons
20130319-142345.jpg

The undeniable truth: Sacramento courts failed Jessica Hernandez and her son– at the cost of the young boy’s life. A judge chose to disregard crucial information and that irresponsible decision cost a family dearly. She’s not the first judge to do so. Nor will she be the last. To whom are these authority figures judges, social workers, civil servants answering? Other than contesting a verdict via the appeals process, what choice does one have when they know something is wrong? Why must children suffer at the hands of adults supposedly entrusted with their protection?

REFORM AMONGST THE FAMILY LAW COURTS, CWS, AND FOSTER CARE IS IMPERATIVE– THE NEED IS URGENT AND THE TIME IS NOW.

Day 11: Last book you read

For those of you unfamiliar with Damien Echols and the ‘West Memphis Three’ here is some background.

Let it be known that I have researched this case extensively. It takes more than a celebrity endorsement or a buzzworthy film for me jump on the bandwagon. I’ve done my homework.

20130311-234038.jpg

West Memphis, AR is ‘right across the bridge’ from downtown Memphis. At the time of the tragic deaths, I was the same age as those three little boys, only six years old. The killer[s] of Stevie Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore literally got away with murder.

This case is one that’s been on my radar for years. Not only do I have an inherent understanding of life in the Bible Belt of the deep south, but I know all too well what it’s like to be on the fringe in high school under these conditions. Deviation from the mainstream is often viewed with ignorance, scorn, fear, or all of the above. A wardrobe filled with black and a taste for hardcore music solicit stares. The whispers begin. Interest in counterculture and alternative spiritualities really gets people talking. Society eyes the stereotypical ostracized teenager [outcast, freak, weird, scary, etc.] with suspicion, which quickly escalates into a mob mentality when a scapegoat is needed. Guilty until proven innocent. Toss a bunch of ideas around and see if anything sticks. No matter how absurd the claim, once the seed is planted, the damage is done. Some people get railroaded without ever knowing what hit them. Rights get violated. Not everyone is equal in the eyes of the law. Preposterous allegations become fact while irrefutable evidence to the contrary never sees the light of day.

20130312-111947.jpg
Don’t even get me started on the colossal failure of the judicial system….

I leave you with a handful of quotes from within the pages and two critical reviews that resonated with me.

“Everyone puts on their Sunday best and pays tribute to religion’s slaughterhouse and then dines on a cannibal communion. Education is foreign to the sunburned beasts of burden, and the painkiller comes in black-labeled Tennessee bottles. No one here moves quickly, but everyone moves with absolute certainty.”

“I’ve seen men who were haunted to the point of madness by things that never were and things that should have been….The ghosts in fire freeze and the ghosts in ice burn. Some died long ago; some were never born. Some ride the blood in my veins until it reaches my brain. Sometimes I even mistake myself for one. Sometimes I am one.”

“I want a life of strife, lust, striving, seeking, struggling, and debauchery.”

“Any friendship that is worth it’s weight is like a dark and secret place where you hide bits of yourself. The door can be opened only by the two people who have the key, and you carry it with you wherever you go. Magnify that by a billion, and you begin to get an idea of what marriage is like.”

~

“Damien Echols spent eighteen years on death row for murders he did not commit. Somehow, in the depths of his unspeakable nightmare, he found the courage and strength not only to survive, but to grow, to create, to forgive, and to understand. Life After Death is a brilliant, haunting, painful, and uplifting narrative of a hopeless childhood, a wrongful conviction, a brutal incarceration, and the beginning of a new life.” – John Grisham

“The life of Damien Echols is a journey similar to that of the metal that becomes a samurai’s sword. Heated and pounded until it becomes hardened, it can hold its edge for centuries. It is incredible that Damien endured and survived one of the most tragic miscarriages of American justice, and emerged such a centered, articulate and extraordinary man and writer. Life After Death proves that he paid dearly for his wisdom. – Henry Rollins

Hear ye, hear ye

Blogging serves as my outlet for self-expression. It’s cathartic, enabling me to vent, while also fulfilling my creative need. It’s something I truly enjoy doing regardless of how many people are paying attention. Even if I’m not discussing anything deep– especially if I’m not discussing anything deep– I rely on this blog to occupy my time in a productive manner. More often than not it’s a distraction, which I need. But I absolutely will not allow it to become a stressor. So if that means skipping a few days [or weeks], announcing things on my terms, omitting some things, beating a dead horse into the ground with other things, rambling nonsensically or being rendered speechless, controlling who can read certain entries, or anything else I can do as the Queen/Dictator/Divine Ruler/President of Cocktails With Hemingway….that’s my prerogative.

Malnourished, underweight, exhausted, stressed to the max, depressed, broken, feeling awkward because of the camera, and halfheartedly attempting a smile…this is me. Taken this morning at Marisha’s it is the most current picture I have.

So I’m going to jump into the March Blog Challenge on the current day instead of panicking that I’ll never catch up starting from the beginning. No deadlines bind me to optional, self-imposed projects that aren’t important. I’ll do it when I do it and if it doesn’t get done oh well. The same goes for my photo edits. Of course I respect your time– just look at what a stickler I am for punctuality. Being prompt and efficient is extremely important to me. However, I am doing you a favor, so please don’t pester me. Why should I work myself into a frenzy because I need a few more day? Do remember that I’m taking time I really don’t have to do something special for you. For free. We don’t have a contract and I’m not getting paid for my efforts. With that being said….if you want some of my creations [and are patient and respectful] don’t hesitate to ask. Like blogging, my foray into ‘visual arts’ is quite enjoyable. Just don’t send more than 5 photos at a time.

I made this for my parents. While Mom pursued graduate studies in Nashville, Dad manned artillery in Vietnam. These pictures come from the summer of ’69.

Now I’ll switch to some lighter fare.

People never cease to amaze me with their…puzzling…behaviors. Whether it’s a blatant disregard for the law or your own life, these two made me laugh out loud. The next logical step is their cohabitation. Not paying rent frees up considerably money for his ‘extracurricular activities’ thus ensuring he’s never sleeping and hypervigilant [not to mention aggressive, paranoid, erratic]. Who better to provide on site security for this foreign national and her authority complex? She’ll be warned before those pesky cops arrive with plenty of time to flee the scene. They’ll be luxe squatting all over the world.

One of my dear friends, a police officer, had an interesting night on the job.

There is nothing funny about congestive heart failure. There is nothing funny about drug addiction. It’s actually quite sad and disturbing. Paging Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, anyone?

‘Abka Re Bey’ a.k.a. Tabitha Gentry
Sovereign Citizen & Moorish National

Do you see any trace of remorse on this face? Of course not. Homegirl knows she got free rent and lots of attention. I would advise her to enjoy those 15 minutes now because I hear time passes slowly in prison….but she’ll never be incarcerated for any significant amount of time. She doesn’t acknowledge legal authority so jail won’t acknowledge her. That’s how it works, right? I’m a sovereign citizen of my own little planet. You cannot image how relieved I am to know that upon my return to Memphis I won’t have to worry about saving for a house. The first unoccupied home for sale that I stumble upon is mine for the taking and I won’t have to spend a dime!

[[SIDENOTE: Quite a few years of my youth were spent in this gorgeous home. One of my best friends and her family lived there. Abka Re Bey could not have picked a more stunning estate. Although I’m sure it looked much better with furniture, especially considering the flawless decor I observed during my time on 600 Shady Grove.

I’ve never been arrested. But by God, if the law must take me…..let them take me pantless and ‘fleeing the scene’ in a battery operated Power Wheels truck.

Have warrant. Need transportation.

Adam's fine motor skills far surpass mine but I'm trying to draw your attention to the red text within the scribble.

Sometimes my widdle feewings get hurt when I think about how my good name has been dragged through the mud in light of recent events….despite what CPS wants to believe I am not the most despicable human being that has ever walked the planet.  It HURTS when your child is a traumatized victim and very few people [none of them government officials] care.  It HURTS when people tell you repeatedly to your face that they refuse to do their job and investigate.  It HURTS having your family destroyed.  I’m tough as nails and mad as hell [perfect title for a country song if it's not one already] but I do have feelings.

Would you find it in your hearts to forgive me if I shared a prime example of me being really immature?  Every few days I get on the Shelby County [Memphis] warrant lookup website and type in Will’s name.  His active warrant pops up and I check the dazzling mugshot to verify his identity.  This has been a part of my routine for quite sometime now.

I don’t know if it’s new or I simply overlooked it.  The text I’ve circled says:  “Should you locate yourself in our warrant database, you may contact the office and make arrangements to surrender.  If you don’t have transportation, we will assist you in this matter.”  Am I the only one who finds that hysterical?

First of all, it says ‘may’ instead of ‘should.’  I like the way they give you an option.  You don’t have to surrender– they’ll find you either way– but that option is on the table if you want it.  Then there’s the actual surrender.  I’ve never been arrested or had any warrants but I can’t imagine wanted fugitives are chomping at the bit to line up and turn themselves into authorities.  Not that I’d ever advocate running from the law….but it warms my soul to think of a dangerous felon reading that sentence, having a change of heart, and deciding to mosey on down to 201 instead of stealing somebody’s car at gunpoint, fleeing the state, and living a pitiful secret existence on the lam.

Hands down, the last sentence is the best.  How exactly do they assist you with ‘transportation’ issues?  A MATA pass?  A police convoy sent to your residence?  I would pay money to hear a recorded phone conversation on the local news from a criminal wanting to turn themselves in….and proceeding to ask for help with transportation.  That would totally make my week.

Reason #345 I hate Atascadero

The town's largest employer and primary tourist attraction.

Yesterday found me consumed the last minute preparations of JiLTED‘s mini issue so off went the TV.  It’s both ridiculous and shameful how much television I watch…but I’ll save that post for another day.  Suffice it to say I require something mindless that enables me to zone out entirely and exert zero brainpower whatsoever.  Cable marathons [Law & Order: SVU (although that's my preference I'll never deny a Law & Order), Criminal Minds, NCIS, Ghost Adventures, and especially Lockup] work wonders in my quest to get sucked into the boob tube for hours on end.

As soon as the issue was released it was time for Lockup.  I’d even left it on MSNBC so I could flick my remote and jump right into the action.  Imagine my surprise when I heard this sentence:  “Atascadero State Hospital, the large all-male maximum security for the most violent criminally insane sexual offenders….”  Come again?  It’s impossible to miss the sign for the hospital and the acreage [the buildings cannot be seen without entering the property] as you can see it from El Camino Real, the main street in Atascadero, but I was completely oblivious to the fact that it was a facility of this nature.  And here I am thinking it’s more along the lines of MMHI [Memphis Mental Health Institute].  Apparently it employs 2000+ people on over a thousand acres.

Here’s what their website has to say:  “Located on California’s Central Coast, midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Atascadero State Hospital (ASH) is an all-male, maximum security, forensic facility serving the entire state of California. ASH opened in 1954 and is a completely self-contained psychiatric hospital constructed within a security perimeter. ASH has a licensed capacity of 1275 beds, of which 204 are acute/psychiatric and 1071 are intermediate care. All residents at Atascadero State Hospital are male and have a mental disability and pose a threat to others or themselves. The majority are remanded for treatment by the superior courts of the counties of California or by the Department of Corrections pursuant to various sections of the California Penal Code and the Welfare and Institutions Code. Individuals are admitted from state prisons, county jails or are transferred from other state hospitals. The hospital does not accept voluntary admissions.”

While I’m sure this isn’t the most cheerful work or ‘residential’ environment, the more I read about it, the more disgusted I feel.  I’m not going to pretend to be an authority on the subject– though I definitely want to ask Brandi [she's lived in this area a long time and used to work in the medical field]– but it sounds like major reform is needed.  NPR’s article “Violence Surges At Hospital For Mentally Ill Criminals” explores some of the recent issues with this place.

Ground Zero Memorial, Brazil’s steamy soap operas, and Jo Calderone

The 9/11 Memorial

One of my most surreal experiences in NYC involved Alan Gompers taking me to Ground Zero.  He dropped me off and waited in the car a few blocks away, offering me my solitude as I gazed at the area where the Twin Towers once stood.  At this time my view of the memorial was severely limited as it was under construction.  The 9/11 Memorial is now completed– with the exceptions of a museum and shopping center to come later– and opens to the public on the tenth anniversary of September 11th.  CNN’s account details the specifics of the design, acknowledges the conflicts associated with its construction, and shares a brief history of significant memorials in our country.

Imagine taking your first ride in an airplane….only to spot from the sky your home in the middle of a burglary.  This happened to Steven Lynn of Jonesboro, AR.  His uncle was at the residence and the two robbers ran from him– only to have Lynn’s pilot follow them as they attempted their escape– and describe their whereabouts to dispatchers.  Police promptly busted the unlucky capers thanks to the aerial assist.

Shocker:  Michele Bachmann says something stupid.  Apparently she missed the memo that the Everglades is not the place to drill for oil and natural gases.  Oopsie.

Consider Real Clear Politics to be your Cliff Notes on contemporary political issues.  I wholeheartedly believe that society would be less apathetic to the political process if they understood it more and made an increased effort to be informed.  As a political science major I cannot stand it when people adopt a snobbish attitude towards politics….that’s truly unfortunate.  Knowledge is power.  Arm yourselves.  Real Clear Politics offers email updates to ensure you are up to date with all things political and includes some of the following categories:  Real Clear Markets, Real Clear World, President Obama, Election 2012 Analysis, and National Security.

If you don't know who this person is, allow Real Clear Politics to assist you.

I’ve mentioned the West Memphis Three numerous times in this blog.  Although most of you are familiar with the case I wanted to include a link of archives from WREG [the leading source for local news in Memphis].  In addition to the information you can find online, I highly recommend reading The Devil’s Knot by Mara Leveritt and watching the films Paradise Lost 1 & 2.  I have yet to write my massive pieces regarding the acquital of these three men but I guarantee you it is coming.

“How a mix of female empowerment and steamy soap operas helped bring down Brazil’s fertility rate and stroke its vibrant economy”National Geographic‘s article on Facebook grabbed my attention yesterday.  [[Sidenote:  National Geographic's brilliant photos and informative articles are posted daily on their Facebook page-- friend them if you haven't already.]]  Reading about women defying societal and religious norms to take control over their reproductive lives is empowering.  Their six-point plan for decreasing the nation’s fertility rate proved particularly interesting.

Lady Gaga a.k.a. Jo Calderone

Whatever your opinion on Lady Gaga’s music [it's not my cup of tea] you cannot dispute the fact that she most definitely makes a statement.  For the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, Gaga attended as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone….yet were her intentions and message lost in this [arguably] over the top display?  Kelsey Wallace, blogging for Bitch magazine, says: “I do appreciate her postmodern-to-the-extreme commentary on celebrity culture, and I like that she attempts to do something with the platforms she’s been given– both politically and artistically….however, the cheesy accent and wild mugging for the camera pushed the persona into self-indulgent territory.”  For me it was too much.  As the article mentions, Annie Lennox did this first, and I’m disappoint that Gaga [with the premiums she places on innovation] didn’t give credit where it was due.

Major developments with the West Memphis 3

What will happen tomorrow?

Megan Childers set the wheels in motion when she shared this headline with me:   Judge sets unexpected hearing in Jonesboro for West Memphis 3.  Shortly thereafter Brittany Cole posted this development from WREG in Memphis:  West Memphis 3: Two, Including Echols, Will Be Released Friday.  Local sources confirmed it too:  Speculation mounts on freedom for West Memphis 3 UPDATE.

While I knew critical events were going to unfold in the near future, I had no idea it would be this soon.  Megan, Brittany, and I could barely contain our enthusiasm during our exchanges on Facebook today….but I must resist the urge to feed into the frenzy and speculate preemptively.  I’ll wait until tomorrow before I speak any further.  You know I’ll be glued to the television around 9 am Pacific time– for once in my life I am glad I am a ‘homemaker’ working from my computer so I can see this in real time!

However, as Megan mentioned, there absolutely must be some sort of safeguard in place so the state can’t be sued.  Perhaps that explains why there is a guilty verdict when the three steadfastly maintained their innocence for almost twenty years.  And if Damien is rumored to be released, will it be Jason or Jessie that is not, and why?  On a final note, a quote from my friend from Neshoba, Bruce Ralston:  “They don’t let convicted felons out of jail just because they admit guilt. As far as I know, the only two ways that convicted felons can be freed ahead of schedule are: (A) pardon/clemency; or (B) by having the charges thrown out, which means that the verdict of guilty is overturned completely. There is such a thing as getting a new trial and being released in the interim, and there have been sentences have been reduced to time served for one reason or another, but this doesn’t smell like either of those situations.”  Food for thought.

Getting away with murder?

Antoine Dodson spoke the truth.

Universally speaking, most people agree that each of these defendants are guilty of murder– and they got away with it.  While O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife and her friend were killed [in my opinion] in a coldblooded and premeditated crime, I believe Casey Anthony accidentally killed her daughter– though she was playing with lethal fire in her attempts to sedate her– and panicked.  So many individuals seemed shocked that both of these criminals walked free.  Did the prosecution failed to meet their burden?  Or was the defense just that phenomenal?  Maybe both?  I think much larger questions are raised with certain acquittals…..gender, race, socioeconomic status, the caliber of lawyers & witnesses, celebrity, and even whether or not somebody is considered attractive.

I remember seeing the O.J. trial when I was ten.  More than any specific evidence I can recall the impassioned pleas of Nicole Brown Simpson’s sister and Ron Goldman’s parents, wanting justice.  While their loss is no less tragic– and two relatively young lives were cut short– at least the families can take some degree of comfort knowing they had lived life.  Caylee never even had a chance.

People will be outraged for awhile but soon enough the feelings will fade and some will forget.  For others, that will be impossible. This isn’t Nancy Grace’s trial du jour…..and for those who have been involved since the very beginning– we won’t ever keep this far from our minds.

What a day

Another sweet little lamb gone too soon...

Between this being the anniversary of the absolute worst day of my life and finding out that Casey Anthony will be released from jail in a few days…..I am just beside myself.  There have been enough tears shed today though I’m probably nowhere near depleting the reserves.  It’s time for some comic relief in the form of bad parenting on Facebook.
