Oh, Doctor

“Your life can be taken away at any moment. I just want people to know that anyone can make a difference, no matter how small or big.” ~ Sean Krause

Happy birthday, Tatum!

20130221-214933.jpg

Spending time with Adam was the best part of Tatum’s birthday. We met at McDonald’s for dinner. Nita was kind enough to make the video you see below– our happy birthday to sister.

Adam made some silly faces to go along with his card and present for Tatum.

Year of the Tater

Just like Mommy and Big Brother, Tay Tay isn’t digging the crowd. Parties are overrated anyways. I zoomed in on Tatum’s bored expression amidst the festivities.

It’s past midnight in Memphis…happy birthday, Tatum. I love you so much and miss you more than you’ll ever know. <3

Fettuccine and hippos

Last Friday’s visit with Adam was our first in San Luis Obispo. I suggested the SLO Children’s Museum– neither one of us had ever been– and we absolutely loved it. Truth be told, Adam was a bit young to fully appreciate some of the exhibits [there is a preschool play area on the top floor that's perfect for entertaining any wee ones not blinded by science], but who doesn’t enjoy three floors of cool stuff to touch and climb?! I’d highly recommend it for anyone with children 3+.

Of course the hurricane wind simulator caught Adam’s eye immediately. After I emerged unscathed from my test run, he agreed to come with me. All it took was one windy round as a pair– and he rode solo the next three times.

There aren’t too many places in this area where a child can be an astronaut, actor, and perform on stage with animals simultaneously.

20130220-195229.jpg

If not for the excessively loud children that arrived shortly after him then he probably would have stayed up here most of the time.

He showed very little interest in the boats but was attempting to prolong our visit. I just really like this picture.

Somebody clearly inherited Mommy’s penchant for pasta. Our mutual favorite foods consist of noodles drenched in various sauces. When Adam requested fettuccine Alfredo for lunch, I knew nothing else would suffice. Mama’s Meatball satiated our craving. He inhaled the giant dish, graciously allowing me several bites while he was eating [and the tiny portion of boxed leftovers], and bragged that he could eat over a hundred bowls in one sitting.

Few things surpass the joy of encountering a faux hippopotamus on the back patio of a museum. With the exception of the live animal version at the Memphis Zoo, we’ve never stood face to face with Mommy’s favorite animal. Cue astounded ‘whoa!’ faces.

Awful day

“Tempt not a desperate man.” ~ William Shakespeare

All entries from today were planned and [mostly]completed yesterday. Posting such lighthearted material marks a tremendous contrast to my emotionally draining afternoon occurring on one of the worst days I’ve ever had. These three sentences you are reading replace the original three pages meant for this space…three pages of the rawest, revealing, and most personal words I’ve ever composed. The floodgates were unleashed for all to see. Just not tonight.

One in two

In two days my precious daughter turns one. Although I doubt she’ll remember much about this milestone, I know she’s aware of my absence, and no words can express how much that shatters my heart. Being able to hug your child on their birthday– even the stress associated with parties for kids– is something I’ll never again take for granted.

If I were home we’d definitely be out and about as we celebrated her birthday week….so I’m glad that Tatum has lots of family to keep her busy in my absence. Let’s take a look at what she’s been doing:

20130219-190824.jpg

She loves her play area. She also loves playing hide and seek. Bonus points for her ability to play hide and seek in her play area. Can you spot the Tater Tot?

20130219-191320.jpg

Much like her brother she is ravenous and devours everything in sight. Despite no shortage of available food, she still attempts to slyly snatch a sandwich from an unsuspecting victim.

Now is the perfect time to practice walking and standing!

Some of her best times occur at ‘Camp Theresa’– the home of Theresa [a.k.a our beloved childcare helper/lifesaver] and her family. Note the contrast between Adventurous Trucker Tatum and Girly Ballerina Tatum. ;)

My offspring wearing a frilly, pink tutu. I smell the influence of a certain Maris in this photo shoot…

Those tire earmuffs are absolutely priceless! In this photo Tatum enjoys her first Monster Jam [event featuring giant trucks jumping over and/or crushing little cars]. No I’m not joking. Vroom vroom.

27 years ago something awesome happened

…Megan Childers was born!

Happy birthday to my favorite roomie and one of my oldest friends. I hope you have a wonderful celebration. You are loved and missed– what a sweet day it will be when we’re reunited. Tell all of your partygoers to take a moment at the festivities to think of our little family and send us some good vibes. And stay away from exploding stoves and people who refer to themselves as Transformers characters. ;)

Obviously this photo doesn’t come from the present year. It’s a throwback to 2010. But it worked with the Mardi Gras theme on Smilebox.

Hole In My Soul

20130214-082649.jpg

I cannot make another holiday card for our separated family.

20130214-083226.jpg

Exactly one week from today Tatum celebrates her first year of life.
One year old..
I cannot be with my baby girl for her birthday. The following morning marks another appearance in Family Court. Why?
